Mad Max fans get their first look at Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa during some behind-the-scenes shots in Sydney this week.
Some Photos Show Furiosa 20 Years Younger
Taylor-Joy, who has skyrocketed to fame in the last few years for her roles on movies like The Northman and the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit, portrays the Furiosa we know and love in Fury Road, but 20 years younger in the upcoming prequel film entitled Furiosa.

The role, originally made popular by Charlize Theron, was a break-out success in 2015’s Fury Road, taking the main focus away from franchise protagonist Max Rockatansky (played by Tom Hardy and originally by Mel Gibson) for the first time.
Taylor-Joy told MovieWeb about her role: “I’m just so excited [to play Furiosa]. I know that whatever person I will be at the end of it will be remarkably different than the person I am now and I’m excited for that kind of growth. I think you only really get that growth through challenging yourself intensely and I can’t imagine a better role, a better director and a better story to do that for. I’m really looking forward to it.”
The Photos Provide Clues to the Movie’s Plot
These behind-the-scenes “spy” shots from a fan show several tell-tale indicators of the upcoming movie’s plot. We see Anya wearing a green-screen glove, meaning that the character’s signature prosthetic hand will be in place.
We also see other members of the Citadel, including Imperators and War Boys. We already knew that this prequel will tell the backstory of how Furiosa got kidnapped by the Citadel, but these characters look to be relatively unchanged from the ones we saw in Fury Road.
We also see a few more actors on set, including Survivor Australia’s Mark Wales and dozens of extras in very primitive attire similar to what we saw the citizens of Citadel wearing in Fury Road.
We previously reported on set photos that were released for the movie, and you can check out those again in our story here.
When Does Furiosa Take Place?
Furiosa is said to take place somewhere in between Beyond Thunderdome and Fury Road, but creator George Miller is notorious for fudging the timeline a bit in his movies. The only confirmed spot in the timeline for this film is 20 years before Fury Road as Furiosa is growing up in The Citadel.
It is reported that no other main characters were seen during this particular scene’s filming, so Chris Hemsworth fans might be a bit disappointed. But as we shared in a previous story, Chris Hemsworth has already been spotted in character during filming.
Furiosa’s war rig has also been revealed.
It’s exciting to see the progress coming out of this film and I’m excited to see it on the big screen on May 24, 2024!
