Former President George H.W. Bush is probably one of the presidents most likely to have known the truth about UFOs and aliens. Not only was he a President of the United States, but he was also director of the CIA before he was president. His tenure has been tied to a number of conspiracies, but the idea that he may have had knowledge about UFOs probably won’t surprise anyone. In fact, Bush himself has been reportedly quoted as talking about aliens on a number of occasions. But what is the truth behind these claims?
A film director really did say that Bush reportedly claimed he saw a dead alien, and you can watch the video and read the transcript of the accounting below. However, another famous quote of Bush saying that Americans can’t handle the truth about aliens doesn’t stand up to scrutiny quite as well. You can read about that quote in the second section of this article below.

Film Director David Hoffman Says Bush Was Heard Saying He Saw a Dead Alien
Film director David Hoffman shared a story about his sound man hearing Bush saying that he had seen a dead body of an alien. In the video, Hoffman seemed quite certain that the sound man was being honest and not making the story up. Hoffman recorded and shared the story three years ago on his YouTube channel.
At about 1:40 into the video, Hoffman said the incident occurred when he was in his early 30s and making political films as part of his job. For this particular assignment, he was directing an interview with Bush on an airplane while he was running for Vice President with Ronald Reagan.
“I set up the scene,” Hoffman said. “They’re on the airplane. George Bush is drinking like crazy and the sound man is in the back with me, and there’s a wireless mic on George Bush. And George Bush is talking to the interviewer and the cameraman is getting ready. He hasn’t started shooting yet. And all of a sudden, my sound man sitting next to me in the seat goes, ‘Woahhhh!’ And he turns off the sound, stops recording, stops listening. ‘David, what I just heard freaked me out.’ … ‘What’dya hear Nigel?'”
Hoffman went on to share that his sound man, Nigel, heard Bush say that he had seen a dead alien.
Hoffman said: “Nigel said, ‘I heard George Bush say, hey you know those little green people? They’re real. I saw one dead.'”
Hoffman said he believed his sound man.
“Could George Bush have seen a dead alien? You know, I think so, that’s what he said to the sound man,” Hoffman shared. “Not on tape, unfortunately. Sound man is just listening, but the sound man and I never forgot it.”
Hoffman also said that at the age of 15, he was outside trying to catch a glimpse of Sputnik, the first satellite. An elderly next-door neighbor told him that he had seen a UFO when he was in the Navy.
The rest of the video, after talking about Bush, contains an older documentary about aliens and UFOs that Hoffman wanted to share with his audience.
Hoffman is a documentary filmmaker. According to his website, he’s a Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Foundation Fellow who has consulted with companies like AT&T, Google, Verizon, GE, Amazon, and Sony. He’s worked with Jeff Bezos, Megan Smith of the Obama administration, Liquid Robotics, and more. He’s presented twice at TED conferences and is an executive producer of LabTV. With so much expertise and credentials to his name, there’s no reason to believe he’s not being honest and forthright about retelling this story.
Did Bush Say Americans Can’t Handle the Truth About Aliens?
Unlike Hoffman’s story, the rumored quote about Bush saying Americans can’t handle the truth about aliens doesn’t stand up to scrutiny as well.
The story goes that during Jeb Bush’s campaign, Bush Sr. and former President George W. Bush were on the campaign trail to try to help Jeb, People’s Voice reported. At a fundraiser, a man asked Bush Sr. when the government would finally tell Americans the truth about UFOs.
Bush, who was 91 at the time, reportedly replied, “Americans can’t handle the truth.”
A campaign spokesman for Jeb Bush reportedly told reporters that his dad’s comments “did not reflect in any way the opinions of presidential candidate Jeb Bush” and supporters can have their own views on different subjects.
But is this story true? People’s Voice doesn’t cite any sources for the story. When trying to track down sources closer to when it actually happened, we found an archived article from World News Daily Report from September 30, 2015, written by Bob Flanagan, that appeared to be the same article as the one in People’s Voice. However, some of Flanagan’s other stories for the site are less reputable, like a story about a 14-year-old falling pregnant after getting a flu shot.
In 2018, after Bush’s death, The Sun interviewed Steve Bassett, a UFO lobbyist and director of the Paradigm Research Group. In that article, Bassett said the quote came from Bush campaigning with Jeb in the 1980s. So that’s a bit of a discrepancy compared to the original report.
A website from 2016 called UFO Trail tried to track down the source of the quote, and also determined that it originated from the World News Daily Report article. UFO Trail ultimately decided the quote was just satire. They noted that at the time, World News Daily had a disclaimer on the site that read: “WNDR assumes however all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website – even those based on real people – are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any persons, living, dead, or undead is purely a miracle.”
UFO Trail noted that they tried to track down a fundraiser in Orlando that occurred during that time period which Bush Sr. and Jeb attended, and could not find anything to verify the event even happened.
So it appears that the “can’t handle the truth” quote is most likely simply satire. However, Hoffman’s story certainly does raise eyebrows. If only Bush’s quote had been recorded so we could hear it today.
