Facebook Wants You to Rat Out Your Prepper Friends During National Preparedness Month

Ahh, Facebook. That place where you go to see your cousin’s new baby, find out how your old high school friends are doing these days, and be told how you should think. I love that place!

Between bouts of “fact-checking” one side of the political spectrum, Facebook has also decided they will start warning its users of any “extremist” behavior you may have been exposed to, starting back in July.

This might sound like a good idea, but recent warnings have gone so far as to label canning groups as extremist, according to several screenshots of the warning shared across social media this week.

“Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming too prepared,” Facebook warns. “We care about preventing extremism on Facebook. Others in your situation have received confidential support.” From canning. Yes.

Traditionally, canning groups have been set in place to help people learn how to preserve the extra vegetables they’ve grown in their gardens with tips and tricks on how to properly use a pressure cooker to seal the jars. It’s a delicate process that could turn ugly if done wrong, so community support is important.

But according to Facebook, it’s a sign of extremism. And the real kicker here is that September is National Preparedness Month.

“National Preparedness Month (NPM) is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time,” according to the government website. “The 2021 theme is ‘Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.’” SO EXTREME.

Folks, listen: it doesn’t matter what your political beliefs are, or if you believe that someone who owns guns and grows their own food is a bad person. The fact of the matter is, there are people out there who don’t want you to be prepared and they’re politicizing it. That’s a scary thought because it’s obviously not the government (who runs ready.gov); it’s private tech companies that “fact-check” certain things.

So please don’t get caught up in the wheel of politics and don’t be afraid to get yourself prepared for any emergency. Being prepared helps everyone. Dividing us helps no one.
