John Malkovich Thriller The Survivalist Hits Theaters October 1

The Survivalist

The first trailer has been released this week for the upcoming post-apocalyptic prepper film The Survivalist, starring John Malkovich, Ruby Modine, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Malkovich plays the leader of a small armed group who is looking to kidnap Sarah (Modine) because her blood contains a unique immunity to the virus that wiped out much of civilization a year and a half earlier. But former FBI agent-turned-survivalist Ben (Rhys Meyers) is determined to protect the young woman from Malkovich’s character (Aaron) despite the odds being against him.

The intense trailer shows Ben facing up against Aaron and his men as he uses his government and survivalist training to take them out one by one until it’s just Ben vs. Aaron for the ultimate showdown. That seems to be an obvious homage to 80s action classics like Rambo, but with slightly fewer protruding muscles.

The Survivalist (not to be confused with the 2015 film of the same name) is written by Matthew Rogers and directed by Jon Keeyes who both worked with Malkovich earlier this year on the movie Rogue Hostage.

You may already know John Malkovich from hit movies like Dangerous Liaisons and In the Line of Fire, and you may know Jonathan Rhys Meyers from Vikings and The Tudors, but I’m especially interested to see Ruby Modine in this film. Ruby is the daughter of Full Metal Jacket star Matthew Modine and has already made quite a name for herself in Showtime’s hit Shameless as she looks to build her promising career in line with her famous father’s.
