Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 just ended with Episode 87 (aka S4 Episode 28.) So what do we know so far about Season 5, when the show returns? Here are all the details.

Attack on Titan Season 5 Will Technically Be a Continuation of Season 4

Attack on Titan is not ending with today’s newest episode, “Dawn of Humanity.” The show has confirmed that it is returning for another season. However, although many fans may want to refer to the new season as Season 5, it will technically still be a continuation of Season 4.

While we’re excited that the show is continuing, some fans are a little annoyed that Season 4 (long dubbed the “final season”) has lasted this long. Season 4 Part 1 premiered in January 2021, when the manga wasn’t even finishing yet until an anticipated April date. Then Season 4 Part 2 premiered in January 2022 and was still being labeled in marketing promotions as the final season.

The final season is continuing with a Season 4 Part 3, which some may fondly call Season 5.

The final season is this long, likely because the production studio jumped the gun a bit in referring to Season 4 Part 1 as the final season. At the time, they didn’t know exactly how long the manga would be or exactly what was going to happen when it ended. So they may have thought it would be easier and faster to animate the ending than it ended up being.

Either way, we can be excited that the show’s not over.

Season 4 Part 3 (aka Season 5) Returns in 2023 for the 10th Anniversary

Season 4 Part 3 returns in 2023, according to a teaser that was shared at the very end of the episode when it aired in Japan on NHK.  The official website also posted the same details online for people who couldn’t access the Japanese airing.

Here’s the visual photo that was released online, which is very similar to the teaser video.

On the official website, there’s a longer writeup about the announcement. Here’s how Google translated what they wrote in English:

It was announced that the final version of the TV anime “Attack on Titan” The Final Season will be broadcast on NHK General TV in 2023!
In addition, a teaser visual is also released! In the footsteps of the giant after the rumbling, Mikasa, Armin, Levi and other Survey corps, and Reiner, Falco, and Gabi who work together to stop Eren with them are gathered in this visual!

The TV anime “Attack on Titan”, which has continued since 2013, has finally reached its 10th anniversary. Please look forward to 2023!

This is actually pretty exciting, and a detail that I had missed entirely until I read the announcement. Season 4 Part 3 (aka Season 5) will be airing around the same time the show is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Season 1 premiered on April 7, 2013. We’ll likely get nine episodes in Season 4 Part 3 (unless they draw out some chapters even more or add additional details.) If the new season starts in January or February of 2023, we could easily see the last episode airing on the 10th anniversary itself (or very close to it, since April 7, 2023, is on a Friday.)
