If Made in Abyss sounds familiar, you’re probably right! The anime TV series adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi first aired from July to September 2017, and fans of the show were left with an emotional end. You’re probably wondering about Made in Abyss Season 2.
Five years after the first season’s finale, Made in Abyss returns with Season 2 which will air in Japan starting July 2022. According to the Japanese website “Natalie”, there is no official date or time announced yet, only that the second season will be titled “Made in Abyss: The Golden Town of Retsuhi”. However, this is the direct Japanese translation. The actual English title will be “Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun.” which makes it sound a little bit more dangerous of a place to visit! In addition to the core characters from the previous season, the new season will include a slew of new characters.

This installment of Made in Abyss follows Reg, Riko, and Nanachi on their adventure in the Sixth Layer, The Capital of the Unreturned, which takes place immediately after the events in Made in Abyss Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul.

Generations of bold adventurers have been drawn by the cryptic depths of the Abyss. In course of time, those bold enough to explore the dangerous pit came to be known as “Cave Raiders.” In Orth, the town at the edge of the Abyss, there lives a little orphan named Riko, who dreams of becoming as great a cave raider as her mother was and solving the great mystery of the pit. One day exploring the murky depths she stumbles upon a little boy named Reg, who turns out to be a robot.
Made in Abyss isn’t technically post-apocalyptic, however, it contains many survival elements which are right down our alley! Surviving in the wilderness is one thing, and doing so while being a kid is even more challenging. We are keeping our eyes close to this one.
There is no word on whether the second season will be released internationally or with an English dub. Season 1 of Made in Abyss is available on Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll so it’s safe to assume that it will be available there as well, but there is no word on the series being dubbed yet.
In the meantime, here are some extras for the super-fans of the title; according to this Made in Abyss Twitter account, the movie “Made in Abyss: The Dawn of the Deep Soul” Blu-ray & DVD is now on sale but you’ll need a DVD that can play discs with Playback Compatibility Region B/2. And according to wiki, an action role-playing game developed by Spike Chunsoft (Dragon Quest 1 through 5) will be released on consoles and PC in 2022, AND a live-action film began early development in 2021, with Kevin McMullin hired to direct.
