This movie unfolds its gripping narrative under the creative helm of Sam Esmail, who not only directed but also wrote and produced the cinematic experience. This production is an adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name, promising audiences a thought-provoking exploration of the novel’s intriguing themes and scenarios on the big screen.
Leave the World Behind made its debut on the world stage at the AFI Fest on October 25, 2023, capturing the attention of audiences with its premiere. The film then played in selected theaters starting November 22, 2023.
Netflix’s Bidding War
In July 2020, Netflix secured the rights to the novel following a competitive bidding war, with Sam Esmail taking the helm as director and writer for the film. The star-studded cast initially featured Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington, who were also set to produce the project. However, by September 2021, Mahershala Ali had replaced Washington, while Ethan Hawke and Myha’la Herrold joined the cast in January 2022. Filming commenced in April 2022 on Long Island, specifically in a residence designed by The Up Studio. The production also included additional scenes filmed in Katonah, New York, on May 19, 2022, according to lohud.com.
The Up Studio wrote “In 2019 we designed a modern farmhouse for a young Long Island family. Two years later, we got a call from an unknown number. What became of that call was bigger than we could have imagined (and we imagine things for a living!) On the other end was a location scout from Netflix. She’d seen our Open Corner House online and wanted to know if it was available to rent. It wasn’t… not really. (It had been, and still is, the primary residence of the family we designed it for.) But, she had my attention.”
You can read the rest of the story on their website. “Over the last year and a half we’ve helped connect the team at Netflix with the homeowners to negotiate the rental details and we also worked closely with the art directors while they rebuilt a replica of the entire house on a soundstage!!”
