Want something to look forward to in 2020? Well, The Game Awards just occurred and quite a few new post-apocalyptic and survival-based games were announced. So that’s something to celebrate! Here’s a look at the new game trailers announced that might fall in the post-apocalyptic (or at least dystopian/survival) category.

Here are all the new post-apocalyptic games announced during #TheGameAwards2020. Click To Tweet

Note: Not every game on this list is technically post-apocalyptic. Near the end of the story, we also include games with a survival/dystopian theme or a theme about preventing an apocalypse.

Evil Dead: The Game

Bruce Campbell is BACK as Ash in Evil Dead: The Game, which is coming in 2021 to PS5/PS4, Xbox Series X/S/One, Switch, and PC. This new game will have co-0p and PVP, IGN noted.

Fortnite’s Michonne, Daryl & Master Chief

Fortnite is bringing some apocalyptic goodness to the game with new additional Michonne and Daryl from The Walking Dead, along with Master Chief from Halo.

Back 4 Blood

Back 4 Blood is a zombie co-op shooter by Turtlerock, who brought us Left 4 Dead. The closed alpha will begin on December 17, according to the website, and the game will be available June 22, 2021. It’s described as a “cooperative first-person shooter from the creators of the critically acclaimed Left 4 Dead franchise. You are at the center of a war against the Ridden. These once-human hosts of a deadly parasite have turned into terrifying creatures bent on devouring what remains of civilization. With humanity’s extinction on the line, it’s up to you and your friends to take the fight to the enemy, eradicate the Ridden, and reclaim the world.”

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut

Disco Elysium takes place in a city recovering from a huge war that took place decades before, and you’re a detective solving a murder. The game debuted in October 2019, and a Disco Elysium: The Final Cut will premiere on consoles in 2021, Engadget reported. This new version will have new quests, characters, new areas to explore, and full voice acting, Engadget notes. This new version will release in March 2021 for PS4/PS5, Google Stadia, PC, and Mac. In Summer 2021 it will be released for Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

If you already have Disco Elysium, you’ll get this version as a free upgrade on PC or Mac.

The Callisto Protocol

Ok, so we don’t know enough about this game to know if it is technically post-apocalyptic. It’s horror sci-fi survival and may be apocalyptic, but it’s not yet clear. From the creators of Dead Space, the press release reads: “The game challenges players to escape the maximum security Black Iron Prison and uncover its terrifying secrets.”

Kotaku notes that this takes place hundreds of years in the future of PUBG’s universe, so that sounds like it really might be apocalyptic and if it is, I’m 100% here for that. Sadly, we’re gonna have to wait a while longer for this one. It’s worth noting that PC Gamer believes Callisto is not the game by Striking Distance that takes place in PUBG’s future.

The YouTube announcement lists it as coming out in 2022 to PC and consoles.

Season

This sounds like a sad yet beautiful mid-apocalyptic tale. This is a game by Scavengers Studio for PS5 that was described in Game Awards as a game focused on “exploring and recording disappearing cultures.” On Steam, the description reads: ” a third-person atmospheric adventure bicycle road trip game. Explore the world through the eyes of a young woman. Collect artifacts and memories before a mysterious cataclysm washes everything away.” You can add it to your wish list here. There’s no release date yet, but Scavengers Studio will likely be sharing updates.

ARK II

ARK isn’t technically post-apocalyptic. It’s a world all of its own, where you must survive among dinosaurs. Because of the survive-in-a-primitive-world element, we’re including it as something you might want to watch for when the sequel’s released.

Plus, we have an animated series on the way starring Elliot Page, Gerard Butler, Michelle Yeoh, Russell Crowe, and more.

Scavengers Beta

Scavengers was announced at the 2018 Game Awards. It’s a multi-player survival game by Midwinter Entertainment. During The Game Awards 2020, it was announced that it’s now available in closed beta with 50,000 player slots available on PC, GameInformer reported. This closed beta runs until December 21. You can try to join the closed beta here.

Mass Effect

Mass Effect is more about preventing an apocalypse rather than being about a post-apocalyptic world, but it’s still close enough to include. BioWare announced that a new one is on the horizon.

Evil West

This one is not post-apocalyptic, but more an avert-an-apocalypse-in-the-Old-West type of game. (And that’s a pretty unique angle, I’d say.) The description reads: “A dark menace consumes the American frontier. As one of the last agents in a top-secret vampire-hunting institute, you are the final line between humanity and a deep-rooted terror that now emerges from the shadows. Rise up to become a Wild West Superhero, eradicate the vampire threat and save the United States! In visceral, explosive combat, unleash hell with your firearms, lightning-fueled gauntlet and gadgets. Kill bloodthirsty monstrosities in style as a lone hunter or in co-op with a friend. Explore and fight in a narrative-driven campaign while upgrading your weapons and hunting tools. Unlock new perks to evolve your monster-slaying mastery, crafting your own playstyle to defeat the supernatural hordes.”

So yes, this game by Focus Home Interactive and Flying Wild Hog isn’t apocalyptic, but it sounds like a great break if you want a game that’s a lot like fighting zombies without actually being about fighting zombies. Follow updates on Steam. It’s releasing in 2021.
