There’s a lot to unpack surrounding the premiere of Attack on Titan Season 4. While I absolutely loved Season 4 Episode 1, I’m still trying to figure out who the man was at the end of the episode. This article is for people like me who haven’t read the manga yet, but want to chat about theories for the new season.
This article will have spoilers for Episode 1 and potential spoilers if any of the theories are right, but it is manga-spoiler-free. Please don’t add spoilers from the manga in the comments. Thanks. 🙂
Fans Have Several Theories About the Man’s Identity at the End
At the very end of the episode, during the credits, a man is seen reading a newspaper in Marley. We only see the bottom half of his face since he’s wearing a hat, but the scene focuses in on him for quite some time. This seems to indicate that he’s going to be an important character later.
Here he is:
When considering who it might be, it’s important to remember that we’re in a time jump. This is four years since the last episode aired, so characters are looking a bit different now (not to mention a slightly different animation style at times.) For example, check out how much Reiner has changed from Season 3 to Season 4:
Still, we can gather some clues from previous episodes.
Theory 1: Levi
I’ll admit that Levi was my initial guess. I mean, he looks a lot like Kenny and Kenny is Levi’s uncle, so we should presume that Levi will grow to resemble Kenny more and more the older he gets.
But the more I thought about it, the more I had to admit that the mystery man looks like KENNY but not Levi. Levi has black hair, not light brown. His face is shaped differently.
Besides, we got a glimpse of Levi in the Season 4 trailer and he doesn’t look THAT different.
I’m going with NO it’s not Levi.
Theory 2: Kenny
I mean, why not include Kenny as a guess, right? The guy looks like Kenny. Sure, we saw Kenny die in Season 3. But could he have been saved by someone? I mean, this is Attack on Titan and characters don’t typically just come back from the dead like that, unless they’re Eren. So I’m going with NO it’s not Kenny.
Theory 3: Jean
My vote goes with Jean.
The facial structure and hair color matches (plus, that color of hair is fairly rare on the show.) He’s tall in previous seasons, just like this character. We also know that he’s great at staying under the radar or pretending to be someone he’s not, since he passed for Eren twice on missions.
Jean was one of the scouts who saw the ocean at the end of Season 3, so he was still alive and well the last time we saw him.
Theory 4: Eren
A final guess is Eren. But once again, I’m doubting that. If you saw him in the Season 4 trailer, he doesn’t look anything like the man in that ending scene.
So in the end, my guess is that the man we saw in that last scene was Jean doing undercover work in Marley.
