With the upcoming fifth Mad Max film, George Miller is taking a pretty big risk by switching up the fan favorite cast members for new faces, but Chris Hemsworth knows that he has some pretty big shoes to fill.

Miller announced late last year that Hemsworth would be playing a “male role” in this prequel film that will further explore the origins of Furiosa, a character that became wildly popular after 2015’s Max Max: Fury Road.

While we do know that the Furiosa prequel will focus on a young Furiosa, played by The Queen Gambit‘s Anya Taylor-Joy, we don’t know much at this point about Hemsworth’s character just yet.

Miller has made no secret about the fact that he’s taken some liberties with the Mad Max universe. Between the comics, the books, and the movies, it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s what, but if anyone can make it work, it’s definitely the guy who made all of this up in the first place.

Hemsworth stated in a recent interview with ABC Australia that he is not only proud to be coming back home to New South Wales to film the movie, but he also feels a “lot of pressure” to do the franchise proud.

“It’s something I’m going to put my heart and soul into because it really is for me, out of everything I’ve done, the biggest pinch-myself moment because I’ve grown up watching it,” he added.

Hemsworth has even hinted at the possibility of giving the original Max, Mel Gibson, a call for advice. This is particularly interesting because Hemsworth has not officially been confirmed as playing the role of Max in the new film, but it sounds like that might be the plan.

Furiosa is set to film in and around New South Wales, thanks to a government incentive called “Made in NSW” that has allocated $175 million AUS per film over five years. This sets Furiosa to be the largest film ever to be made in New South Wales.

Furiosa is expected to release in theaters on June 23, 2023.
