As we sit here anxiously awaiting the next installment of the Mad Max franchise, Warner Bros. granted us a Christmas miracle by announcing that Mad Max: Furiosa will release on June 23, 2023.

Yes, you read that right. 2023. Two and a half years from now.

Warner Bros. confirmed on Wednesday that the film will be released in theaters and not just on HBO Max, as it’s doing with its 2021 movies. But, honestly, who even knows what’s in store for us in 2023? Right?

Furiosa is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road that will continue the long tradition of being headed up by director George Miller. It will star Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa, along with Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth and Aquaman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Originally, Miller had considered “de-aging” the original Furiosa from Fury Road, Charlize Theron, but ultimately it came down to the technology. And as anyone who has seen the latest Mandalorian episode knows, digitally de-aging doesn’t always work out so well.

And while Theron had stated in an interview that she was “heartbroken” over the recast decision, she says she trusts Miller’s decision. “Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner. We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we’re focusing on.”

Taylor-Joy has been experiencing an amazing amount of attention lately, even after Miller was able to snag her for the Furiosa role. As we’ve discussed back in November, the success of The Queen’s Gambit is certainly hiking Taylor-Joy’s stock up quite a bit, so this upcoming movie should be a big hit.

“I fell in love with Furiosa because of the way Charlize presented her,” Taylor-Joy said in an interview on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “She did such an incredible job. It was so beautiful. I can’t even think about trying to step into her shoes. It has to be something different because it just can’t be done.”
