The Anime Covered Volumes 1-3 of the Eighty-Six Light Novel

According to viewers on Reddit, if you start reading the 86 light novel at Volume 4, then you’ll pick up right where Episode 23 (the Eighty-Six Season 1 finale) ended. You won’t feel confused because the anime followed fairly closely to the light novel, although some things were left out. The anime covered volumes 1-3 of the Eighty-Six light novel (with Season 1 cour 1 covering volume 1 and Season 1 cour 2 covering volumes 2 and 3.) 

However, quite a few Redditors do suggest that viewers go ahead and start at the beginning of the light novel to get the full experience. 

Miyuki_13 wrote, “I would suggest to start from the first volume because there were scenes in the light novel that didn’t make it into the anime but if you really just want to start where the anime left off, read volume 4. The anime covered volumes 1-3.”

And doquan2142 wrote, “Starting from vol 4 is fine already, but vol 1 will give you more details about the life in the Spearhead base and other pilots. Cour 2 captured vol 2 and 3 perfectly imo.” 

New readers are warned to expect some crazy things in the upcoming novels. Without sharing any spoilers, Coren024 simply wrote, “Vol 4 and 5 contain nightmare fuel, with a little more coming in 9.”
