Bird Box was not only a huge hit in 2018 when it came to Netflix, but it still remains one of the streaming service’s most popular movies to date with 45 million people watching in the first seven days alone.

Now Netflix wants to extend that popularity by making an updated version entirely in Spanish with a brand new cast and setting in Barcelona, Spain.

The original movie starred Sandra Bullock as a mother who must save her children from a strange apocalypse where anyone who looks at these spooky entities will instantly kill themselves.

While this spin-off news originally came earlier this year, this is the first time we’ve received word of the new cast and the plot.

“Mario Casas (Los 33), Georgina Campbell (Black Mirror), Diego Calva (Narcos: Mexico), and Alejandra Howard (Fatima) will be joined by Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Celia Freijeiro, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner and Leonardo Sbaraglia,” according to a release.

As for the plot, it looks to be very similar to the original, but in Spain. “After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population by causing all who see it to take their lives, Sebastian and his young daughter Anna must navigate their own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. But as they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than the unseen creatures grows.”

A threat more sinister than the original creatures? Does that mean that this isn’t a simple re-telling of the same story, but a new story in the same world?

The producers of the original movie, Dylan Clark and Chris Morgan, are back on this one as well to assist Spanish writers and directors Alex and David Pastor. Former director Susanne Bier will switch to the executive producer spot along with author Josh Malermann, Ryan Lewis, Ainsley Davies, and Brian Williams.

While the plot is very similar to the 2018 film, some fans believe that the update will include more than just a new cast, language, and setting. The author of the 2014 book for which the movie is based, Josh Malerman, has written a sequel in 2020 called Malorie. Many believe that this new film, while not an official sequel, may incorporate parts of that book, although there is no word that the Malorie character or Bullock will be involved.

Maybe Malorie will be its own movie sequel at some point?
