What is The Handmaid’s Tale About?

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian drama TV series developed by Bruce Miller, adapted from Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name published in 1985. It was ordered by Hulu as a ten-episode straight-to-series commission, and filming commenced in late 2016. The story occurs in a near-future setting after a Second American Civil War, where the show follows the establishment of Gilead, a totalitarian and theocratic state that coerces fertile women, or “Handmaids,” into reproductive servitude.

The show made history in its first season by capturing eight Primetime Emmy Awards from 13 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series—the first streamed show to ever do so. It also took home a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama, while Elisabeth Moss won an Emmy and a Golden Globe as lead character June Osborne.

Filming for the last season commenced in September 2024 and concluded in early February 2025, making way for the much-anticipated season finale of the much-praised series. You can watch the final season on April 8th on Hulu.
