The highly anticipated adaptation of the Emily St. John Mandel novel, Station Eleven, will be hitting HBO Max on December 16 of this year, and a brand new teaser trailer proves that this is a TV series we just have to see.

HBO’s Station Eleven is based on the 2014 novel of the same name that depicts the end of the world during a catastrophic flu pandemic. It stars Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Lori Petty (Tank Girl), Daniel Zovatto (Penny Dreadful: City of Angels), Joe Pingue (The Book of Eli), David Wilmot (The Alienist), Matilda Lawler (Flora & Ulysses), Nabhaan Rizwan (1917), Danielle Deadwyler (Watchmen) Philippine Velge (Summer of 85), and Gael Garcìa Bernal (Coco).

The trailer shows off the anxiety and fear for people suffering through the beginning of an unknown pandemic all the way through to years after most of society has collapsed. There’s a particularly beautiful scene that caught my eye showing a caravan of horse-drawn travel trailers, trucks, and even what looks like a UPS van making their way through a ruined cityscape.

The series is said to span multiple timelines as the survivors aim to rebuild what’s been lost. The show looks to remain in the book’s Great Lakes regional setting, as shown by a map of the Lake Michigan area in the trailer.

The novel won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2015, citing an appreciation of the book’s focus on the rebuilding of human culture rather than humanity’s survival. It was also a finalist for National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award, and the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction.

The 10-episode limited mini-series will be coming to HBO and HBO Max on December 16, 2021.
